Developers of Ethereum announce another update of the network for the new year

Key facts:

“Muir Glacier” only contemplates the proposal of delaying the pump difficulty. The next evolution of the network, Serenity, is not expected until 2021.Approximately January 1, 2020, the network Ethereum will activate a new network upgrade called “Muir Glacier”. Happen on the block 9.2 million with the aim of delaying the “pump trouble”. The announcement responds to the agreements held at the monthly meeting Ethereum Core Developer Meeting number 76, which took place on the 29th of November, as published Breaking News in that opportunity.A publication in the official blog of the Foundation Ethereum notes that the update “Muir Glacier” only contemplates a proposal of improvement, the PID 2384, unlike the bifurcation of Istanbul which was activated successfully at the beginning of December and which was implemented by six of the 11 proposals of improvements of the ethereal (IEP for its acronym in English) planned for the fork. The announcement also brought with it some of the demonstrations, on Twitter, of people linked to the ecosystem, those who turned their comments around to deal with the hassle of performing a network update, on festive dates. In fact, as can be viewed in ethernodes the majority of the nodes are not ready to be updated, and it is likely that the majority will not do so until after the Christmas holidays.

For its part, the user @thibauld expressed their dissatisfaction with two separate updates, one behind the other, clearly referring to that has been less than a month since the implementation of Istanbul.

The PID 2384 focuses on delaying the bomb difficulty, which is a mechanism built into the algorithm of Proof of Work of Ethereum, which increases the value of the mining every 100 thousand blocks extracted. With the new update the bomb of difficulty will be delayed by another 4 million blocks, or approximately 611 days. The developers of Ethereum agreed to postpone the mechanism to avoid complications in the phase of transition from proof of work to proof of participation. While developers were planning to upgrade Istanbul, in principle, they felt that the pump difficulty not be noticed until the middle of 2020. This meant that it could be delayed with safety with the upgrade. However, these estimates were erroneous, because the pump began to be noticeable again on 5 October 2019, at the height of the block 8.600.000. The average time of the block is increased. According to Etherscan, at the time of writing this note, the difficulty value is 17,15 seconds, which makes transactions take too much time to process. With the implementation of the PID 2384 this would be the third time since 2015 that delayed the pump difficulty. Firstly it was 3 million blocks during the bifurcation of Byzantium in 2018, and then by another 2 million blocks during the bifurcation of Constantinople February 2019.De face-to-update “Muir Glacier” developers urged to the operators of nodes and miners to update their software, although it also makes it clear that the bifurcation will not affect the owners of the criptomoneda or traders. At the moment there is another update expected until phase 2 of the next evolution of the network, Serenity, which is unlikely to occur before 2021.
